April Workshop: papermaking from re-purposed materials…April 11, 2017
Internationally renowned Peace Paper Project facilitators Drew Matott & Jana Schumacher are returning to Sedona late April and once again will bring their portable paper studio to Verde Valley School where students and the local community will have the chance to learn papermaking and design their own paper initiatives.
Since 2011 Peace Paper Project has used papermaking as art therapy, social action and fine art, and has helped establish 35 studios across the globe including Australia, Turkey, Ukraine, Poland, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom and USA.
It runs a number of regular programs with survivors of war and terrorism, sexual violence, people living with mental illness, art therapists and mental health providers. Most recently Peace Paper has launched programs in Ukraine, working with veterans from the war with Russian separatists; the United Kingdom, working with people living with mental illness, and Germany, working with refugees from the wars in the Middle East.
Jean O’Neil, VVS Art Department Chair, is thrilled to have Drew and Jana back. “Peace Paper Project gives our students the opportunity to see the school’s vision in action, says Jean. Our guiding principles of world citizenship, environmental stewardship, service to others, physical labor and academic excellence are all represented in the work and ethics of Peace Paper.”
During their visit to Sedona, Drew and Jana are also offering a papermaking workshop on Sunday April 30th which is open to the public, and a special rate is being offered exclusively to VVS alumni. Participants are asked to to bring in an article of clothing, share its story and transform it into beautiful sheets of paper. The workshop will explore traditional and contemporary papermaking practices through the lense of personal transformation and expression.
