IB Higher Level Biology
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Education, Prescott College
Master’s in Biology, Northern Arizona University
Kristen’s graduate thesis resolved the species relationships of the genus Lysopomia through field collection of plants in the Andes Mountains and morphological and genetic laboratory analysis of those samples. She has been teaching math and science education for more than 20 years in public and private institutions. While teaching middle school, high school and university level science Kristen focused on redesigning courses in such a way that students take responsibility for their own exploration of learning. She has written General, AP and IB curricula for Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Environmental Science, all of which use polymodal techniques to engage students and demand higher-order thinking. All AP and IB curricula exceed the objectives, skills and content requirements of the Advanced Placement College Board and International Baccalaureate programs. Kristen teaches IB biology and helps VVS faculty utilize their best practices in teaching IB students in 9-12 grade. When she is not at school, she works as an educational consultant and trainer traveling to schools and districts seeking to raise the level of critical thinking in their science program.
